SEC Post-Spring Power Rankings - #10 - Florida Gators

0 Views 1 Comments

This is unheard of territory for the Gators in preseason power rankings for the SEC conference.  Heading into the season, Florida fans are used to high expectations but since Will Muschamp arrived in Gainesville those expectations have decreased year by year.  This year has to be the lowest expectations for a Florida team - there are just so many questions.

For the Gators the questions start at the QB position and at the WR position.  New offensive coordinator Kurt Roper needs to greatly elevate the play of the Florida QB's.  Last year prior to Jeff Driskel's injury he was still only an average QB at best.  He has good athleticism and good arm strength but his accuracy was average and he really struggled to throw the ball downfield because he couldn't read coverage and either stared down his receiver or just held the ball way to long.  It also didn't help that Florida maybe had the worst group of WR's in the SEC last season.  That group of receivers is going to have to step up for Driskel or the highly touted recruit Will Grier to have a chance to succeed.  I expect Driskel to be the starter early in the season but if he struggles their may be a quick trigger to switch to Grier because Muschamp is coaching for his job.

On the defensive side of the ball the Gators once again have a lot of talent and Will Muschamp is a hell of a defensive coach but they are going to have to deal with the loss of some of their best players including Dominique Easley, Ronald Powell, Louchiez Purifoy, Marcus Roberson and Jaylen Watkins.  It is fathomable to say that they this defense may struggle a little bit given the brutal schedule that they face this season.

The Gators have one of the toughest schedules in the nation.  Not only do they play the typical tough SEC East schedule (which includes the cocktail party against Georgia) and the annual battle against Florida State, but they also have to to play Alabama and LSU from the SEC West.  It is a tough schedule for even a great team to navigate and unfortunately for Gator fans I expect them to struggle and if they do, they will be looking for a new head coach this offseason.

Previously Ranked:

#12 - Arkansas Razorbacks
#13 - Vanderbilt Commodores
#14 - Kentucky Wildcats

Couldn't agree more...the Gators are going to struggle again this season and I am going to enjoy watching every single second of it because once they get a capable head coach they'll be back to the same old Gators. Gotta enjoy it while they are down!
